Getting started with Etomite – Installing
Ok, so you’ve heard about Etomite, but how do you install it? Well I’m the guy to ask, as I’m one of the admins over at the Etomite website.
Firstly, make sure that you have created a database on your web-space – and assigned a user the correct privileges to use the database (all).
Secondly, go grab the archived file from the Etomite website. Etomite comes pre-loaded with TinyMCE – If you want to use Xinha, or FredCK Editor, grab those archives from the site too (don’t grab them from the maker’s websites – these archives on the Etomite site have been customized for use with Etomite).
In this example, I am using a fictitious domain name, www.youretomitesite.com, and it’s installed in the root folder of the domain, in public_html.
Ok, so you’ve got the archive now.
Extract the contents of the archive file. You will then end up with some files and folders – Folders: assets, install, manager, templates … Files: ht.access, index.php
Before you upload – do you want the full version (preloaded with some templates and sample documents), or do you want a blank canvas to work with (If you want a blank canvas, do this next bit first, otherwise skip past the next paragraph) I will explain how to integrate the other editors afterwards.
Etomite Lite:
Navigate into the templates folder, and remove all the files and folders EXCEPT the AlexisPro Redux Folder (and it’s contents).
Navigate back into the install folder, then into SQL. Remove the etomite.sql file. Rename etomite_lite.sql to etomite.sql
Now, follow the instructions for Etomite Full. When it comes to the configuration step, in the configuration pages, set the Error Page ID to 3 instead of 6.
Etomite Full:
Upload the extracted archive to your web-space. This will take a few minutes.
Ok, now it’s all uploaded, firstly, you need to CHMOD the assets folder, and it’s contents so it’s writable. Do the same for /manager/includes/config.inc.php … then once you have done that, you need to navigate to the following page.. remember to replace the domain name with your actual domain name…
http://www.youretomitesite.com/install/
The installer will then load up. There are only a few install pages.
During the install process, it will ask you for database details – these are what you have previously created earlier. If you don’t have any prior etomite installs, just leave the table prefix as etomite_ – this means that if you have something already in the database, it won’t wipe it out
Ok, once installed, you will have a congratulations page – do what it says: remove the installer folder, and CHMOD your config.inc.php file back so it’s not writable.
Now you’re all set to get ready to use it! Navigate to http://www.youretomitesite.com/manager/
Use the admin username and password that you defined during the installer.
Configuring for First Use
If you installed Etomite Lite, remember at this stage to set the error-page ID as 3, not 6
Flick through all the tabs – all the settings *should* be correctly configured for your site – make sure the last tab has the physical path to your etomite install – if it doesn’t, set it (usually something like /home/yourusername/public_html) … then press Save at the top.
If you want to use friendly URL’s with etomite, then make sure you’ve switched both options on that configuration page to Yes.
Then, FTP into your webspace public_html folder, and rename ht.access to .htaccess (if there’s one already there, rename that first – you may need to merge rules if you have some special rules already in place).
Adding The Other Editors
Upload the contents of the archive to the manager/media folder – so if you downloaded the xinha package, it should have extracted an archive to “/xinha/files-here” … upload the xinha folder into /manager/media. The same applies to the FredCK editor – upload the fckeditor folder to the media folder within the manager folder.
I’ve just thrown this quick-install guide together for www.attackr.com – if you have any problems during install, then don’t hesitate to head over to the Etomite Support Forums.
