Two months since the release of Google Chrome, Google’s Web Browser, Mac users have been awaiting the Mac relsease, and it seems as if it will never come. But there is a solution. The profound company of Code Weavers, the makers of the very successful Crossover (Wine), released Chromium shortly after Google’s Windows only release of Chrome.

Chromium is essentially a individual virtualization of Google Chrome with the Wine core. Chromium has sweet perks but some downsides as well. The Browser is a virtualization and therefore has the XP/Vista fell to it, creating an out of sync feeling one your mac. Its X|_|[] controls contrast against those positioned on the left on macs, creating confusion. But on the bright side, it is Chrom(ium) on a Mac, and it works.

Chromium, I know, will only act as a temporary fulfillment until the release of the full Mac version by Google.

I recently discovered a DVD file converting software called Handbrake. Its available for Mac OS 10.5.X Windows 2000/XP/Vista Linux and you can even download the source code.

Simply Place a DVD in your drive, Start Handbrake, Click the “source” icon and select the VIDEO_TS folder and click OK. It Scans the files and then allows you to select a destination folder. You can further configure your preferred options. Click the “Start” button and walk away.

After an hour of so come back to your computer and the file has been converted to an .mp4 file. Add this file to the Movies Playlist of your iTunes Library. Select the movie and right click. Choose “Convert for iPod/iPhone” from the menu.

This process takes the longest. I let it go over night. When you wake up in the morning, sync up your movies and there it is. I have done this with several movies and they are extremely high quality. There you go. Great quality movies just like from the iTunes store.

Disclaimer: I only recommend doing this for personal use. Only convert movies that you have purchased. Do not distribute converted files. This is illegal.

In March, Apple released the much anticipated Apple TV, which allows you to stream media files from your computer and view them on your television (along with several other features).

If you don’t want to stream, you can also store the media files on the unit’s hard drive. The current price of the unit (which can be seen here) is $300. If you find that price to be a little high, but still want to be able to view your videos or listen to your music, this article is for you.

To demonstrate what I’ve done, I filmed me setting it up. You watch the video if you want. Basically what I did was take a composite video cable that came with my video camera and plugged it into my iPod and TV. Pretty simple.

I’m not exactly sure what kind of video cable it is (other than that its composite), so I can’t really help you out on finding one. I can, however, offer you a picture of it.

I simply plug one end of the cable into the headphones port on my iPod and the other end (which is composite video) into my TV. Plugging the composite video into your TV can be a little confusing, because you can’t plug it in like you normally do.

This diagram (click that) helps explain what cables go where in your TV. Basically, the plugs on your TV will be in this order: Red, White, Yellow. Plug the cables in this order: Yellow, White, Red. If that makes no sense to you at all….definitely check out the diagram I made. Now you’ve got the cable set up. Woo hoo go you.

Now you need to set your iPod up. Don’t worry, this doesn’t involve hacking your iPod and it won’t void your warranty. From the main screen of your iPod, go to Video. From there, go to Video Settings. Scroll to “TV Out” and make it “Ask” instead of “Off”.

Now scroll down to TV Signal and make sure its “NTSC” if you live in North America/Japan or “PAL” if you live anywhere else. If you’re not sure what setting it should be, check this out.

So after you’ve got your iPod set up, back out to Video menu and go pick a video to watch. I chose an episode of Invader Zim (as you may or may not have seen in the video I linked earlier in the article).

Before the video starts, it’ll prompt you to select either “TV On” or “TV Off”. Obviously we want “TV On”. Now turn on your TV and go to wherever you go when you use your video games, VCR, etc. (usually theres an input or game button on your remote. Hit that.)

You are now enjoying your ipod videos for free on your TV.

I was looking around Google for something (I can’t remember what) I stumbled upon a list of things you can do with your Apple iPod.

One was record audio files for free (the standard method requires a special iPod attachment) with a microphone plugged into the iPod.

One link led to another and I found out that in order to record audio files, you needed an application and in order to use the application, you needed Linux for iPod.

I was reluctant to install it, because I was afraid it would void my warranty. But after some reading, I discovered that since it doesn’t change any of Apple’s software, it doesn’t void the warranty.

It does this by partitioning the hard drive. Before you get all “woo hoo I’m getting this!”, I must warn you that, for me at least, every time I update Linux-related files (applications, games, schemes, etc.) it deletes some of my music.

I’ve been searching around iPod Linux’s forum for answers, but I have yet to find them.

Also, you’ll have to keep the Apple OS and the Linux os on the iPod, because Linux does not yet have a way to play music on its own, although there are applications that can be installed that allow it to do so.

Either way, I would suggest keeping a backup of your music on your computer just in case.

iPod Linux can be found here. Enjoy.
